Project Description
Project Component: Post-Camp Oral Health Awareness & Education
Location: Shree Kalika Devi Secondary School, Shivapuri-6, Gurje, Nuwakot
Target Audience: Students from Playgroup (PG) to Grade 10, Teachers, and School Staff
Organized By: Rotary Club of Kathmandu North
In Collaboration With: Kantipur Dental College & Hospital and BM Foundation
Project Overview
Immediately following the clinical check-ups of the Free Dental Health Camp, the Rotary Club of Kathmandu North, in collaboration with Kantipur Dental College and the BM Foundation, conducted a comprehensive Dental Screening Awareness and Oral Hygiene Education Session. Recognizing that treatment must be paired with prevention, this session was designed to instill lifelong healthy habits and reduce the future incidence of dental diseases within the school community.
Target Group & Tailored Approach
The awareness drive successfully reached a diverse audience, with educational content carefully adapted to suit different age groups:
• Playgroup (PG) to Primary Students: Utilizing interactive, visual, and engaging methods, the dental team taught the youngest children the fundamentals of oral care through fun demonstrations.
• Secondary Students (Up to Grade 10): Older students received more detailed insights into the systemic impact of oral health, the dangers of tooth decay, and the long-term benefits of preventive care.
• Teachers and School Staff: Educators were equipped with the knowledge to reinforce positive dental habits daily, ensuring the sustainability of the program within the school ecosystem.
Core Educational Highlights
1. Proper Dental Cleaning Techniques: Medical experts demonstrated the correct, medically approved brushing techniques using dental models. Participants learned the proper angles, duration, and frequency required for effective plaque removal.
2. Importance of Oral Health: The session highlighted how oral health is deeply linked to overall physical health, academic performance, and self-confidence, emphasizing that a healthy smile is vital for a child's growth.
3. Dietary Awareness: Students and staff were educated on the impact of diet on dental health, specifically warning against the frequent consumption of sticky, sugary foods and carbonated drinks that lead to cavities.
4. Combating Dental Anxiety: By normalizing dental check-ups and making the learning environment interactive, the session successfully reduced clinical fear among the younger children.
Impact and Alignment
By pairing direct medical screenings with robust health education, this initiative fulfills Rotary’s focus on Disease Prevention and Treatment. It transitions a one-day health camp into a long-term wellness strategy, empowering the entire school community—from toddlers to educators—with the tools to maintain excellent oral hygiene.
